Helping Students in the Field

Field research is a necessity for many anthropologists and geographers. This summer, we are excited to be able to host two field school programs in Paleontology and Archaeology.

These unique learning opportunities provide hands-on field research experiences that our students crave. They also prepare students for a variety of careers in archaeology, cultural resources management, biological anthropology, museum collections and curation, and geography, while making a meaningful impact on local communities.

Summer 2021 Field Schools:

  • The Archaeology Field School - which has operated since 1969 - will take place in the Lindenmeier Folsom area in Colorado. This 7-week course will focus on land survey techniques and the excavation of Folsom culture. Check out this great video on learning survey techniques with drones!
  • The Paleontology Field School will head to Bighorn Basin in Northeastern Wyoming, where students will learn how to identify fossil localities, map sections, and collect vertebrate fossils from the earliest Eocene beds in which extinct primates are known.

In many cases, students give up summer jobs to participate in our field schools. You can help to ease this financial burden with a gift to the Anthropology Field School Scholarship.

Give today and DOUBLE your gift!

Thanks to a matching gift from the Paleontology Field School co-directors, biological anthropologist Kim Nichols, and geologist and vertebrate paleontologist, Tom Bown, all gifts up to $4,000 will be matched! Together, we have the opportunity to raise $8,000 for the Anthropology Field School Scholarship!
